Tarheel Tavern #46
Welcome to another edition of the Tarheel Tavern! Here you will find a collection of posts from some of the best bloggers in North Carolina. I know that I always enjoy sending in my work to the Tavern from time to time, but it is a special treat to get a chance to be the host.
Billy the Blogging Poet is the first to show up here. He is hosting the 3rd Annual Idle Handy Award, and his submission is a continuation of the one from last week. The voting on the nominations starts now and ends on Saturday, January 14, 2006. Mosey on over there and check it out.
Mandie Rose gives us a pictorial representation of her reaction to the coming of the new year. I know she believes she's gotten to the end of the matter, but personally, I think she's all wet.
(As an aside, she has also set up a new group on Flickr for fellow shutterbugs called Carolina Wines. Three guesses as to what the theme for that group is!)
Gordon Smith comes into the Tavern this weekend with a twofer. From Scrutiny Hooligans, he blasts a movement in Washington to deny "birthright citizenship" to "anchor babies". And over at BlogAsheville, the Asheville chapter of Drinking Liberally is looking ahead to the 2006 elections, coming up with winning strategies and trying to answer the question, "Who is Otto DeBruehl, and how many deeds can one dude register anyway?"
A Monstrous Smelly Ogre just sauntered into the Tavern and proceeds to beat upon the North Carolina government's teeny little heads with that big club of his. He's a bit upset over the fact that they are going to spend half a million dollars (that's right, $500,000) to have a new website designed... for only one department.
Bora at Science and Politics always has great posts (even if I usually end up disagreeing with his take on political issues, he always makes me think), and this week's submission is no exception. It's a short analysis of the defacto two party political system we have in the U.S. Being a third-party guy myself, I couldn't help being interested.
Laura at Moomin Light has a very interesting post about a family Christmas gift, a CD of the 1973 musical version of Cyrano de Bergerac, but then the post continues on into an analysis of the play itself and why she likes it so much.
Jude from Iddybud tells us a tragic story about what happened to a young female poet who lived in Afghanistan. Did she die by her own hand, or was it murder?
You know that Microsoft just recently shut down a Chinese blogger's website at the request of the Chinese government, right? George over at the Dirty Greek takes them to task.
What did you do over New Year's? Well, Colonol Corn was busy "documenting idiots and knuckle heads acting like fools with my camera." Looks like he had a lot of work.
Justin at The View From The Cheap Seats criticizes the recent N.C. gas tax increase, and gives some pointers as to what he thinks we need to do to try to get some tax relief.
I got a lot of food related posts, so I thought I'd group them together:
Mel from Mel's Kitchen offers up some traditional Southern recipies for New Year's Day. "In the South, a lot of people probably had this same menu -- there's a saying that if you eat poor on New Year's, you'll eat fat the rest of the year."
"You'll never go back to Campbell's soup again" after you've tried the super soup that Laurie is offering up over at ...slowly she turned.
Marcus has some good advice for the new year on how to start making smart decisions about eating healthy.
And finally, I'd like to close things out with one of my own posts about the first 2006 meeting of the Mecklenburg Libertarians... at least, that part of it where I was there.
Well, that does it for this week. Hope you enjoyed this week's edition of the Tarheel Tavern!
